$287 hidden cleaning fee Positive: Horrible owner Negative: I called within minutes of booking because there was a 287 cleaning charge for 1 night stay. We needed a place for the night because highway 1 was closed due to a fatal accident. I explained that I did not see the cleaning charge when I booked because it was a fine print. The owner of the property said he couldn't believe that anyone would book without seeing the whole charge for the night. By the way, the font for the daily rate is big and bold and the cleaning charge is mixed in with taxes and is about 50% smaller. Looked like 34 dollars not 340 dollars. I explained to him that we booked in a rush and were willing to drive 2 hours to get to the property if the rate was a reasonable $334 per night. But once the confirmation came we saw the cleaning fee and the total came out to $678. I informed him we will not drive over 2 hours to sleep 6 hours to just drive back another 2 hours at the exorbitant rate. It is a hotel/accommodation practice that if someone books in error or changes their mind within 1 to 2 hours, cancellation is honored. this was within minutes. he said he had no control over Booking.com and that we will just need to call booking.com. Booking.com called the owner to ask for permission to refund and he wants to keep the money. He stated he had no way to access booking.com's admin portal to do anything about. Then he messaged me to argue and said when he went into his admin portal today and couldn't cancel a same day reservation. Yesterday, he didn't have access to Booking.com or know anything about an admin portal to do anything. Today, he knew about the portal and had access all along but can't cancel a same day booking because the cancel button was grayed out. On Day 4, Booking.com calls him for the refund and he refuses. He just wants to keep the money for a 1 minute reservation. This is not how you run an accommodation. Do not book.
